Experimentele Flats, Utrecht

The Experimentele Flats in Utrecht-Overvecht were developed by city architect W.A.H. Jansen as part of a national subsidy program. Completed in 1971, the project consists of ten apartment blocks organized around shared interior halls. These spaces were designed to encourage social interaction and support flexible forms of living.

Fifty years later the housing is portrayed through the eyes of its first resident families looking back at the beginning – the interior halls as a playground for children. Todays young new inhabitants are happily occupying their flats and reviewing the characteristics. The interior hall in its double function as access and community space are integrated into the daily life.
