Hellmutstrasse, Zurich

The cooperative housing project Hellmutstrasse in Zurich emerged in the wake of a protest against the demolition of homes for 250 residents to make way for a new telecommunications centre in the middle of Zurich. This specific protest led to a political shift, opening the door to the interim use of vacant buildings and ultimately to the founding of the cooperative Wogeno.

An architectural competition determined the design for Wogeno’s first housing project, which was completed in 1991. Designed by A.D.P. Architects, the building embodies a flexible living concept, enabling residents to adapt their homes to changing needs and communal constellations. The film follows the architect Walter Ramseier as he tours the building, recounting its history, while residents offer a glimpse into their homes and share their experiences of living in this dynamic housing model.

A film by Berna Düven, Iva Maneva, Marius Helten, Leonard Wertgen, Jens Franke, Florian Fischer-Almannai.
