Seniorenwohnhaus, Berlin

Seniorenwohnhaus Köpenicker Straße was designed by Otto Steidle and Siegward Geiger in Berlin as part of the IBA 1987. Following the brief to create accessibility for its senior residents, a continuous ramp between an existing housing block and a new addition provides access to all apartments. This prototypical design resulted in an atrium that functions as a circulation space filled with plants and daylight.

The film portraits three senior residents of the Seniorenwohnhaus and follows their experiences and involvement living the house. They describe the challenges of management and maintenance of the atrium along changing ownership structures but also the ramps as an element of self-empowerment and communication.

A film by Nikolay Marinov, Marina Sedda, Irma Softic, Leonard Wertgen, Marius Helten, Jens Franke, Florian Fischer-Almannai.
