Haus-Heyden-Hof was designed in 1983 through a participatory process involving eight future residents and the architects Christoph Schulten and Lothar Jax in Herzogenrath near Aachen. The project was driven by a desire for a form of housing that is both communal and resource-conscious. To reduce construction costs, the wooden structure was partially built by the residents themselves.
Forty years after its completion, a generational shift has taken place. The film documents the resulting changes to the housing complex, raising questions about the flexibility of its design and the continuity of its living ideals and ownership model beyond the founding generation.
Out of consideration for the privacy of the residents, only an excerpt of the film Haus-Heyden-Hof is shown here. In consultation with the participants, we are happy to provide interested persons access to the film and show it at festivals and screenings.
