Participation

Participation means not having to take a ready-made offer from the market, but actively shaping housing based on one's own living ideas and needs. In the housing project by Ottokar Uhl in Hollabrunn, Austria, adaptability to user needs was the main goal of the design process. Conceived in the 1974, the project aimed to radically rethink conventional single-family housing by involving future residents in the planning phase of an apartment building. Uhl then provided a flexible structural framework that allowed users to make decisions about the layout, materials, and expansion of their homes over time. This emphasis on self-determination was linked to a systematic approach envisioning an industry with specific modular elements. Flexibility and adaptability were enabled, however its full potential wasn’t used in the end and the industry didn’t evolve.
